In-Sourcing
In-Source Your IT Applications for Greater Control
The benefits of In-Sourcing were best summed up in a case study of United Parcel Service (UPS) in the bestselling book The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman. In-Sourcing involves using internal resources and contractors to complete a project. For instance, if there was a need for technical documentation for an application that was built, a company could contract the work out to an outside party (out sourcing). However, the needs of the business' stakeholders are often better met through the process of In-Sourcing.
The developers of the application are most generally not great writers - they have very different skills than Content Specialists and Technical Writers. The developers of the application and the business sponsors, however best understand how the application is to serve within the business. This is an ideal situation for In-Sourcing. Technical writers are contracted in who have an expertise that the business does not have. Change management experts are contracted in for deployment of the soon to be completed technical documentation and application. The existing staff is included in meetings with the contractors to ensure that the functionality (from the developers) and the intent (from the business sponsors) are accurately met and deployed through the contracted technical writers and change management personnel.
This is classic In-Sourcing, where a project is accomplished in house with close cooperation between contractors, with very specialized talents, and key stakeholders within the business. The end result is a much higher quality deployment, in far less time, and therefore, far more economic.
